Main Beach ( Playa Principal )

The Playa Principal Beach (The Main Beach) receives its name because it is on the far side of the Main Bay in Puerto Escondido. It is approximately 1,640 feet (500 meters) long and 131 to 262 feet (40 to 80 meters) wide. The clean, gently inclined sand is soft and grey. The warm water is greenish-blue, and the waves are typical.

Tourists can rent a boat to visit other beaches in Puerto Escondido, or engage in water sports.

The Sociedad Cooperativa Punta Escondida (Co-operative Society of Punta Escondida) offers professional deep sea fishing service and equipment. Due to the nature of this sport, boats must go far into open sea, 15 or 20 miles from shore. Some trophy fish are: sailfish, dorado tuna, and marlin, among others.

There is an annual professional deep-sea fishing tournament held here during November, Competitors arrive from all over the world, as well as national representatives from Acapulco , Salina Cruz, Zihuatanejo, Ixtapa, and Chiapas . Some foreign amateurs also participate.

There are restaurants here, offering regional, international, Italian and Japanese specialties. There are hotels, resorts, inns, cabins, bungalows, suites, and trailer parks for tourist accommodations.


Location: Puerto Escondido: Is located 165 miles (265 kilometers) South of the City of Oaxaca via highway 131. Approximate travel time: 5 hours.
The beach is located only 164 feet (50 meters) from Puerto Escondido, along the Perez Gasga tourist trail.
